UM Debate is a co-curricular program housed within the School of Communication. Participation is open to all University of Miami undergraduate students. It is the mission of UM Debate to provide participating students with a valuable educational activity with a primary emphasis on intercollegiate debate competition.
Intercollegiate debate offers a uniquely valuable educational experience that benefits students in many ways, including skill improvement in critical thinking, research, ethical argumentation, advocacy, analysis, persuasion, oral presentation, listening, organization, teamwork, group problem-solving, citizenship, and leadership. Through their involvement in debate activities, students develop discipline, maturity, responsibility, and professionalism.
In addition, our participation in debate activities and remarkable competitive success reflect positively on The University of Miami.
The Debate Team Success Fund is used to support regional, national, and international travel for students and their faculty coaches to intercollegiate debate competitions and to host on-campus events. The Fund benefits any UM student who, through their dedication and hard work earn the opportunity to represent the team and the institution in academic debate competition.
