Black Alumni Society Virtual Reunion: Fantastic Voyage Across the Diaspora

On February 18 and 19, the University of Miami Black Alumni Society (UMBAS) invites you to come along and ride on a virtual Fantastic Voyage! We’ll make informative and enlightening stops at diasporic ports of call, taking a closer look at Barbados, Haiti, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Ghana, to appreciate the beauty and strength that lie beyond their shores. As our adventure unfolds, we’ll learn more about the benefits of traveling, mindfulness, and self-care, and gain insight into nations rich with culture and people originating from the motherland.

UTrailblazers: Building the dream at the University of Miami

The rich diversity of the University’s alumni base is illustrated in the Taylor Family/UTrailblazer Experience, located in the Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. Breezeway on the Coral Gables Campus.

Made possible by a gift from alumnus and University trustee Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., B.S.C. '89, this interactive kiosk, which will be officially unveiled in August, highlights the past, current, and expected future contributions of Black students at the University of Miami, with content curated by the University Archives. The UTrailblazer Experience is the culmination of a multi-year effort to recognize and honor the University’s first Black graduates who, in the 1960s and 1970s, courageously broke down the color and other barriers at the U.

The ongoing pursuit of racial justice at the U

Black History Month is a time to pause, celebrate, and honor the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the multiple initiatives underway across all areas of the institution to advance diversity, equity and inclusion.

Among them is the establishment of a Center for Global Black Studies, which will enrich the intellectual and cultural life of the University and have the opportunity to be a highly visible link between the University and Black communities, both locally and globally.
