In the spring of 2012, members of the Black Alumni Society launched the First Black Graduates Project. The project inspired by the celebration, Unity in Diversity: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Desegregation at the University of Miami and was launched as a way to document and recognize the journey and impact African-American students have had at the University. The work of the Black Alumni Society - UTrailblazer committee members, in partnership with the University, celebrated the significance of this rich history, in February of 2017. This project has resulted in a lasting legacy with the creation of the First Black Graduates Endowed Scholarship. As the legacy evolves, in the pursuit of the roadmap initiatives, the University is committed to supporting a memorial tribute to leave another lasting legacy devoted to UM’s African American history, and for future UTrailblazers, yet to leave their mark. The Black Alumni Society’s UTrailblazers - First Black Graduate committee, with the on-going support of the UM Alumni Association, is actively seeking support to fund the legacy memorial project. Your contribution will help construct a permanent memorial acknowledging these UTrailblazer pioneers, past, present, and future.
