A proud Cane and award-winning star of stage and screen, Frost School of Music alumnus Joshua Henry won the Tony Award for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for his electrifying turn as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the acclaimed Broadway revival of “Ragtime.” A few weeks before the June 7 ceremony, Henry cemented his status as a cultural icon with a performance of Whitney Houston’s classic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” at the Met Gala, one of the world’s most-watched celebrity and media events.
Henry often credits the University of Miami and Frost School for being part of his success, and he has returned to campus to inspire the next generation of performers. In April 2025, Henry was one of 100 distinguished Frost School alumni to receive a Frost School Centennial Medal, and he opened the star-studded concert that marked the University’s centennial with a rousing rendition of “The Room Where It Happens” from “Hamilton,” in which he played Aaron Burr in Chicago and on the production’s initial U.S. tour.
Five recent University of Miami graduates and one current student received Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards this spring, allowing them to conduct research or teach English in another country for several months.
