message from the dean

As we prepare to celebrate Engineers Week later this month, we are reminded that engineering is a collaborative endeavor. The challenges we are working to solve are complex, and real progress happens when we come together.

That spirit is on full display across our college. In this issue, you will read about doctoral students working with industry to advance injectable dermal products and faculty partnering with local communities to test coastal resilience solutions. These efforts reflect that when we collaborate across disciplines and sectors, we can turn ideas into real impact.

Engineers Week is a time to recognize our profession and reaffirm our commitment to working together across labs, departments, and communities to solve the problems that matter most.

Warm regards,

Vincent Omachonu

Interim Dean, College of Engineering

Filters to fight nerve agents

Mechanical engineering Professor Ali Rownaghi has developed a 3D–printed breathable filter that breaks down harmful nerve agents on contact. The filter combines a porous polymer matrix with catalytic additives and a metal–organic framework coating to neutralize toxic chemicals like sarin and VX simulants within minutes. Published in Nature Reviews Materials, this work points to a future where protective gear can be safer and more effective, with applications ranging from military equipment to industrial safety.

👏 Congrats to 51 of our engineering students who completed the Six Sigma Green Belt course through the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers this week! They sharpened skills in process improvement, variation reduction, and data-driven decision making. Huge thanks to Elizabeth Gentry for leading such an engaging experience.
