Welcome to the new academic year at the University of Miami College of Engineering. I extend a warm welcome to our incoming students and their families, as well as the new faculty members joining our community.
The start of the fall semester brings great energy to campus and endless opportunities to connect and collaborate. I encourage our students to get involved in engineering organizations, research, and the many campus activities the University offers. The experiences and relationships you build outside the classroom can be just as important as those inside of it.
Over the summer, our faculty continued advancing research that addresses real-world challenges, from understanding the impacts of sargassum on South Florida communities and strengthening coastal resilience to developing new technologies to better patient care. I look forward to seeing the ideas and discoveries that emerge from our faculty and students in the year ahead.

University of Miami researchers are uncovering how sargassum can release contaminants into air, water and sand as it decomposes. Their findings suggest overall risks are low but emphasize important considerations for public health.
Biomedical engineering researchers are developing advanced imaging technologies to better understand how childhood myopia develops and progresses. The project could lead to earlier detection and more effective strategies to slow the progression of myopia.
Researchers are developing an AI-assisted process to recover and reuse critical rare-earth elements from discarded electronics. The project combines artificial intelligence and advanced materials to support more sustainable clean energy manufacturing.
Engineering students developed their most advanced Lunabotics rover yet, earning a top honor in the autonomy category of NASA’s Lunabotics challenge. The project combined mechanical, electrical and software engineering to overcome obstacles similar to those faced in real-world space missions.
From world-renowned research labs to the factory floor of an Italian supercar manufacturer, biomedical engineering students explored how engineering principles are applied across industries during a study abroad program in Florence. The experience connected biomaterials coursework with real-world innovation.
Engineering students helped bring 3D printed concrete technology from the lab to a major public park in Atlanta. The project demonstrated how advanced construction techniques can rapidly create customized structures for community spaces and beyond.
This summer, Inside Higher Ed, Nature Research, and Fast Companyspotlighted SEAHIVE, a University of Miami-developed shoreline protection system that reduces wave energy while supporting mangroves, corals, and other coastal habitats.
Mechanical engineering master’s student Ragulan Pulanthitan is contributing to a biosecurity research project focused on improving indoor air quality. Working with a research team in the Department of Chemical, Environmental, and Materials Engineering, he is helping study how air filtration systems under different conditions to support cleaner and safer indoor environments.
This summer, undergraduate researchers in the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program worked with Associate Professor Ali Ghahremaninezhad on innovative concrete materials designed to make infrastructure more sustainable, durable and resilient. Their work explored ways to reduce cracking, improve performance and support self–healing concrete.
