University of Miami

May 2025

message from the dean

As we close another academic year, I am filled with both pride and optimism about the spirit of innovation taking root across the College of Engineering and the larger University of Miami community.

This spring, we saw big ideas become real-world ventures. From the USTAAR Competition to the Engineering Pitch and Innovation Challenge, our students are designing solutions with the potential to become startups. These events, along with the projects showcased at the Senior Design Expo, demonstrate that innovation is part of our culture.

This year’s commencement ceremony captured that same spirit. We were honored to welcome back College of Engineering alumna Lila Snyder, CEO of Bose, as our commencement speaker. Her story, from mechanical engineering student to leader of one of the world’s most innovative companies, inspired the audience.

To our graduates, thank you for helping build a community where innovation thrives. We look forward to seeing everything you accomplish next.

Wishing you a safe summer,

Pratim Biswas

STORIES

A potential end to ‘forever chemicals’

A new thermal treatment technique being developed by researchers at the College of Engineering could help destroy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in soil, leading to the potential demise of "forever chemicals."

Hitting Their Stride

Three biomedical engineering students transformed their passion project into an award-winning and mission-driven startup, developing an augmented reality rehabilitation system that helps amputees regain mobility and alleviate phantom limb pain.

Powering a once-in-a-century energy transition

The University of Miami’s Energy Summit showcased breakthrough technologies shaping the future of energy, with the opening panel emphasizing the need for diverse energy sources and cross-industry collaboration.

SPOTLIGHT

Provost Awards

Congratulations to Prannoy Suraneni and Lokesh Ramamoorthi on their honors at this year’s Provost Awards. Suraneni earned the James M. Tien Early Career Award for his pioneering work in low-carbon concrete and coastal resilience. Ramamoorthi and a multidisciplinary team received the Collaborative Teaching Award for creating the nationally recognized “AI in Health Care” course, preparing future health care leaders to use AI ethically and empathetically.

ITD First Graduating Group

The first cohort of students graduated from the Innovation, Technology, and Design (ITD) program. Designed to be completed in just three years, the interdisciplinary degree empowers students to become innovators across fields. Before commencement, the nine students showcased entrepreneurial projects ranging from fuel-efficiency devices to safety innovations and wellness apps, demonstrating the program’s real-world impact.

Welcoming New Graduates

The College of Engineering Alumni Association hosted a special "Welcome to the Club" event to celebrate graduating seniors and officially welcome them into the College’s growing alumni community. The gathering brought together students, alumni, faculty, and staff, helping to strengthen connections and build a lifelong network of support within the College of Engineering.
