University of Miami

April 2025

message from the dean

As we move through April, there's a buzz of excitement on our campus. This year marks the University of Miami's centennial, a historic milestone that invites us to reflect on the past 100 years of impact.

The College of Engineering has always been a hub for bold ideas and innovative solutions. This month, we are proud to host two major events that embody that spirit. On April 21, we will welcome leaders from General Motors, ExxonMobil, and Florida Power & Light, as well as researchers and industry pioneers, to explore the evolving energy landscape and our role in building a sustainable future at the Energy Summit.
Just a few days later, on April 29, we will showcase the incredible talent of our graduating seniors at the Senior Design Expo, a fitting sendoff for our next generation of engineers as they continue their education or launch their careers. That morning, we will have 10 teams pitch their ideas to various venture capitalists to advance their entrepreneurial interests.

It has been an energizing semester and it is not over yet. We look forward to welcoming you at these events and share in the pride of our collective achievements.

Sincerely,

Pratim Biswas

Dean, College of Engineering

Spotlight

Engineering faculty rank among top scholars

Pratim Biswas, dean and professor of chemical, environmental, and materials engineering, and Antonio Nanni, professor of civil and architectural engineering, have been recognized among the top 5 percent of scholars at Association of American Universities institutions, according to Academic Analytics.

Their recognition reflects the College of Engineering's strong research impact across disciplines. They were honored alongside Alexis Piquero of the Department of Sociology.

Engineering students shine at eMerge Americas 2025

The College of Engineering made a strong showing at this year's eMerge Americas, with students taking top honors in two major competitions.

Shruti Choudhary won the Startup Showcase with SmArt, a nanoparticle fertilizer designed to reduce waste for farmers. Her innovation stood out among more than 100 ventures, earning a $125,000 investment.

Software engineering students Deceli Soto, Jenna Viard, Ivy Enyenihi, and Jailyn Matthews won the Solve for Miami Competition with R.I.P.E., an AI-powered app that helps users track produce expiration and reduce food waste.

Biomedical engineering students win first
place at ACC InVenture Prize

Elissa Cimino, Ben Broyles, and Aidan Scott-Van Deusen took first place at the ACC InVenture Prize, a nationally televised innovation competition showcasing top student-led startups from Atlantic Coast Conference universities.

The team represented the University of Miami with SimuStride, an augmented reality system designed to help amputees regain mobility and reduce phantom limb pain. This marks another major milestone for the team, who also won $30,000 at the Rothberg Catalyzer Pitch Competition last year.

Sparking interest in STEM

More than 100 Girl Scouts visited the College of Engineering for Girl Scout Engineering Day, a hands-on event designed to inspire interest in STEM among girls in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The event featured nine interactive stations run by 40 undergraduate students and evaluated by eight graduate students. Activities included edible tower competitions, cookie box Jenga, and air-powered vehicles—all teaching key engineering principles like friction, aerodynamics, and Newton's first law.
