I am excited to extend my sincerest congratulations to our distinguished alumni: Past President Julie B. Kane, J.D. ’93, and Melanie A. Damian, J.D. ’96, who were honored by the Anti-Defamation League with the Jurisprudence Award, and Peter Prieto, J.D. ’85, who will receive the Judge Learned Hand Award from the American Jewish Committee in March. It is wonderful to see our alumni continue to be recognized nationally by peers, charities, and community organizations.
Especially exciting is the selection of our alumnus, The Honorable Marco Rubio, J.D. ’96, to serve as Secretary of State of the United States of America—one of the nation’s highest-ranking positions and a tremendous honor to say the least. Secretary Rubio is a prior recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award and truly is an Alumnus of Distinction.
Interim Dean Patricia Sanchez Abril continues her fantastic work at Miami Law. She is no doubt the change we have needed these past years, and we are lucky to have her at the helm of our alma mater. As I mentioned in a prior note, our School of Law was the foundation for my development as a professional and as a practitioner, I am committed to giving back to our wonderful school. I encourage you all to become involved with the Law Alumni Association, mentor students, and facilitate the continued growth of our organization so the next generation will be as fortunate as we have been.
Finally, I am delighted to share that I have transitioned to a new law firm, Shaw Lewenz, and will continue to work alongside distinguished Miami Law Alumni Michael Lewenz, J.D. ’14, Matthew Kohen, J.D. ’14, Zachary Ludens, J.D. ’14, Kimberly Slaven-Hauth, J.D. ’15, Lauren Palen, J.D. ’22, Gabriel Morales, J.D. ’22, and others. I am so grateful for the support of our Miami Law community throughout this transition. My updated email is jshaw@shawlewenz.com, as always, feel free to reach out to me for anything at all.
